As more Marketing teams are reimagining their event strategy and moving to a virtual or hybrid approach, there's a need for speakers to understand how to present virtually. Here's a few tips that will set you up for success!

Got more tips that's not included below? Let us know your go-to tip to help you prepare.

Camera angles matter.

Make sure you look your best by raising your camera or computer to eye level to give the appearance that you are looking straight at the viewer.

Tip: Stack books under your laptop to raise your webcam to eye-level

Audio is just as important as picture quality.

The most important part of video is audio so do not use the built in speakers and microphones on your computer. Invest in headphones and a microphone. Headphones will also help you block out any noise distractions.

Tip: Bandwidth is important. Make sure no one is watching the video stream while you’re presenting. In addition, turn-off all your computer and phone notifications and close out browser tabs.

Adjust your lighting.

Lighting is just as important as audio. The major reason for bad/poor video quality is due to low lighting. Sit facing your light source. A well lit window has lots of natural light which will make you look human.

Tip: Brighter and softer is better which reduces reflections from eyes and glasses. Use a soft lamp in front of you. For a more professional look get a ring light or create a three point lighting set up, position at 12, 10 and 2 (of a clock).

Check what's visible in your background before you start.

Think about what will be in the visible frame. What will the attendees/viewers see? Think uncluttered and minimalistic. Your background does not need to be green screen extravagant but it should not be distracting to the viewer.

Dress for success.

First and foremost, dressing for success means wearing something that will make you feel confident. A solid color (neutrals, soft blues, browns), button down shirt or blouse that are well pressed and wrinkle-free does the job.

Avoid noisy patterns (stripes) and colors (black or all white) that might render poorly on video. Stripes causes a moiré pattern or distracting ”ringing.” This is especially true if you are using a green-screen.

Practice makes perfect.

The audience can tell when you know your content inside and out. Not only does it make you more credible, but it makes you more comfortable. Record yourself giving the presentation on your phone. Be familiar with your content so you’re not reading on camera.

Tip: Keep to your time! Have a separate clock or timer on hand so you are aware of the time and know when to wrap up.

Performance tips for success.

Keep it simple and direct. Interact and involve your audience in a conversation. Try to relax and enjoy the presentation. Smile!
